Child & Teen Counseling Growing Up Is Hard Work GET STARTED TODAY

Child & Teen Counseling in Bucks County

Two Licensed Clinicians with Graduate Training in Child & Adolescent Care

Childhood is full of growth and discovery, but it can also bring emotional challenges that feel overwhelming for both children and their families. Academic pressure, social difficulties, anxiety, mood changes, and major life transitions can deeply affect a young person’s confidence, behavior, and sense of self. When children or teens struggle to process what they’re feeling, those struggles often show up at home, at school, and in how they relate to others.

At Anchor Counseling & Consulting, our practice brings together two licensed clinicians whose backgrounds make this more than general counseling. Stephanie Tobey (MSW, LCSW) earned her Master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a behavior specialist for children with developmental disabilities before joining the practice. John Tobey (MA, EdS, LPC, NCC) has over 16 years of experience in the mental health field, with graduate training in counseling and marriage and family therapy. That combination of disciplines gives our practice clinical depth for child and adolescent work that a single-discipline practice can’t replicate. We welcome clients of all backgrounds and belief systems, and every family receives the same professional care and respect.

Signs Your Child or Teen May Benefit from Counseling

It’s not always easy to know when a child’s behavior warrants outside support. The question parents ask most often is whether what they’re seeing is a phase or something more. Occasional mood swings are a normal part of development. The concern is persistence: when changes affect multiple areas of a child’s life and continue for several weeks, professional input is appropriate.

WHEN TO REACH OUT
Signs Counseling May Help
Persistence across multiple areas of life is the key signal, not any single moment
Mood & Emotional Changes
Increased irritability, sadness, or anger; low energy or lack of motivation; ongoing anxiety, excessive worry, or frequent fears.
Social & Behavioral Shifts
Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities they once enjoyed; defiance, aggression, or impulsivity; trouble expressing emotions or communicating effectively.
Academic & Physical Signs
A sudden drop in school performance or ongoing academic struggles; changes in sleep patterns or appetite.
Life Transition Difficulty
Difficulty coping with major life changes like divorce, relocation, or loss.

Early intervention gives a therapist the chance to help a child build coping tools before challenges spread across multiple areas of life.

Our Approach to Child & Teen Therapy in Bucks County

Every child is different, and their care should reflect that. At Anchor Counseling & Consulting, counseling plans are built around each child’s personal history, goals, and temperament rather than a fixed protocol. We begin by getting to know your child as an individual, including their personality, experiences, strengths, and the specific challenges prompting the visit, and develop a plan designed to meet their needs at their current developmental stage.

Our therapists use age-appropriate techniques to help children and teens feel comfortable and engaged throughout the process. These may include:

  • Play-based therapy for younger children, which helps them express emotions in a natural, nonverbal way that bypasses the verbal demands of talk therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral techniques to help children and teens identify unhelpful thought patterns and build practical coping strategies they can use outside of sessions
  • Strengths-based work that focuses on what a child already brings into the process, building confidence and practical skills rather than cataloging deficits
  • Trauma-informed care that moves at a pace respecting each child’s comfort level, supporting children in processing difficult experiences without retraumatizing them
  • Talk therapy for older children and teens to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a structured, confidential setting
  • Skill-building exercises targeting emotional regulation, communication, and problem-solving, so young clients have tools ready when challenges arise

For families who want to incorporate faith into the therapeutic process, we offer Christian counseling for children and teens that blends proven therapeutic methods with spiritual guidance. Families who prefer a traditional clinical approach receive the same professional care. We welcome clients from all backgrounds and belief systems.

Supporting Emotional Growth at Every Stage

As children grow, they encounter new challenges that require different types of support. We work with children and adolescents across all developmental stages, providing guidance that evolves alongside their needs.

Developmental Delays

Children with developmental delays may experience frustration, communication difficulties, or challenges in social settings. Stephanie Tobey’s direct experience as a behavior specialist for children with developmental disabilities means this isn’t a general offering. She brings targeted clinical background to building skills, confidence, and a stronger sense of independence in the children who need it most.

Anxiety

Anxiety can show up in many ways, from excessive worry and avoidance to physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches. We help children and teens understand their anxiety and develop practical tools to manage it effectively.

Depression

Feelings of sadness, isolation, or hopelessness can significantly affect a child or teen’s quality of life. We provide a supportive environment where they can process emotions, build self-esteem, and rediscover a sense of purpose.

Life Transitions

Changes such as starting a new school, family separation, or the loss of a loved one are particularly destabilizing for young people, who often lack the vocabulary and context to process change on their own. Counseling provides a structured space to work through these transitions and develop healthy ways to cope.

Social & Behavioral Challenges

Difficulties with peer relationships, communication, or behavior can affect both school and home life. We help young people develop stronger social skills, emotional awareness, and healthier ways of interacting with others.

    What Parents Can Expect

Parents often come to us with two questions before scheduling: what actually happens in sessions, and how can they be kept informed? The first appointment focuses on getting to know your child and your family’s concerns. From there, the counseling plan is built collaboratively, accounting for the child’s history, goals, and preferences.

Confidentiality guides every session. Children and teens have a private space to speak openly, which is often what allows real progress to happen. At the same time, we maintain open communication with parents, sharing themes and progress in ways that help align the home environment with the work happening in sessions. If safety concerns arise, those are addressed directly with the family. The boundaries of confidentiality are explained before sessions begin, so there are no surprises.

The length of therapy varies. Some children work through a specific concern over a few months; others benefit from longer engagement as deeper patterns are addressed. Progress is reviewed collaboratively rather than following a rigid timeline. Anchor Counseling & Consulting also offers a secure client portal where parents can review appointment details, complete intake forms, and communicate with their counselor, keeping logistics organized and your family’s information private.

    • What happens during a child or teen counseling session?

    • How involved are parents in the process?

Parents play an important role in the therapeutic journey. While sessions may focus on the child or teen, therapists often provide updates, guidance, and strategies to support progress at home.

    • Is counseling only for serious issues?

Not at all. Child counseling can help with a wide range of concerns, from everyday stress and social challenges to more significant emotional or behavioral issues.

    • How long does counseling take?

The length of therapy varies depending on the individual. Some children benefit from short-term support, while others may need longer-term care to address more complex concerns.

    • Do you offer faith-based counseling?
