Find Hope & Healing with Anchor Counseling & Consulting

Depression can make it difficult to see a brighter future, but recovery is possible. John Tobey, MA, LPC, a Licensed Professional Counselor with graduate-level training in counseling and marriage and family therapy, leads our approach with compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to each person’s story. With effective therapeutic strategies and a genuine commitment to your growth, clients find real relief from depressive symptoms and rediscover joy, purpose, and connection.

How Depression Affects Daily Life

Depression affects much more than mood. While symptoms vary from person to person, depression creates emotional, mental, physical, and social difficulties that interfere with overall quality of life. In children and adolescents, it may show up as irritability or withdrawal rather than outward sadness, which is one reason individualized assessment matters so much.

HOW DEPRESSION SHOWS UP
Depression Affects Every Area of Life
Symptoms vary by person and may look different in children and adolescents.
Emotions & Thoughts
Persistent sorrow, numbness, loss of interest, feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt, and harsh self-criticism that make it hard to remember your own value.
Behaviors & Motivation
Drained motivation turns once-simple tasks into real hurdles, often leading to social withdrawal, pulling back from family, and falling behind at work or school.
Physical Health
The mind-body connection means depression often surfaces as chronic fatigue, disrupted sleep, changes in appetite and weight, and unexplained aches or pains.
Relationships & Quality of Life
Fighting depression strains connections with partners, children, friends, and colleagues. Communication breaks down, and emotional exhaustion creates distance from people who care about you.

Because depression presents differently for everyone, there’s no single way to experience it. Therapy helps individuals understand their symptoms and develop strategies for managing them in healthy, sustainable ways.

Our Approach to Depression Counseling

Effective therapy begins with understanding each client’s unique story. No two people experience depression the same way, and no single treatment plan fits everyone. When you come to us, John Tobey, MA, LPC draws on graduate-level training in counseling and marriage and family therapy to build an individualized plan around your personal history, goals, strengths, and support systems.

We serve adults, young adults, adolescents, couples, and families, and we welcome clients from all backgrounds and belief systems. For clients who want their faith woven into the counseling conversation, Christian counseling is available on request. Those who prefer a traditional clinical approach receive the same professional care and attention. A secure client portal keeps your care organized and private, letting you review appointment details, complete intake forms, and communicate with your counselor between sessions.

By focusing on each client’s personal strengths and resilience, we help people recognize their ability to overcome obstacles, build confidence, and move toward a more fulfilling future.

Therapeutic Approaches Used in Depression Treatment

We draw on evidence-based approaches adapted to each client’s needs. Where depression intersects with difficult past experiences, trauma-informed care is woven into the process, allowing clients to move at a pace that respects their comfort level and supports lasting stability.

EVIDENCE-BASED CARE
Our Therapeutic Approaches
Each plan is adapted to the individual’s needs, history, and goals.
1
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)
Identifies and challenges negative thought patterns that fuel sadness, hopelessness, and low self-worth, building healthier perspectives over time.
2
SOLUTION-FOCUSED THERAPY
Highlights existing strengths and practical solutions rather than dwelling on problems, building confidence in your ability to create meaningful change.
3
MINDFULNESS-BASED INTERVENTIONS
Keeps clients present rather than overwhelmed by worry or regret, reducing stress, improving emotional regulation, and increasing self-awareness.
4
INTERPERSONAL THERAPY
Improves relationships and addresses social factors contributing to depression, especially helpful for grief, relationship conflict, life transitions, or isolation.
5
CHRISTIAN COUNSELING
Integrates evidence-based techniques with spiritual principles and values for clients who want their faith woven into the counseling process.

What You Gain From Depression Therapy

Working with our team goes well beyond immediate symptom relief. Clients who engage in depression counseling often experience benefits that carry forward long after sessions end:

  • Deeper Self-Understanding - Therapy gives you a safe space to unpack the root causes of your depression, helping you understand your emotions, triggers, and behavioral patterns.
  • Healthier Coping Skills - You’ll build a practical set of strategies to manage stress, handle difficult emotions, and navigate life’s ups and downs without losing ground.
  • Stronger Relationships - Learning to communicate your needs clearly and understand others’ perspectives helps you repair and deepen connections with the people who matter most.
  • Greater Resilience and Self-Esteem - Over time, therapy helps you reconnect with your own worth, quiet your inner critic, and face future challenges with real confidence.

    • What types of issues can individual counseling help with?

Individual counseling can support people dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship concerns, life transitions, career stress, and personal growth challenges. In addition to individual therapy, we also offer marriage counseling, family counseling, and other supportive services to help couples and families strengthen communication and navigate challenges together.

    • How do I know if individual counseling is right for me?

    • How long does individual therapy last?

The length of therapy varies for each person. Some clients attend counseling for a short period to address a specific concern, while others continue longer as they work through deeper patterns.

    • Is individual counseling confidential?

Yes. Counseling sessions are private and guided by professional confidentiality standards. Your counselor will explain the limits of confidentiality during your first appointment.

    • Do you offer Christian counseling within individual therapy?

Yes. Clients who wish to include their faith in the counseling process can request Christian counseling. This approach integrates spiritual beliefs into the therapeutic conversation when it is meaningful for the client.
